State buyers, associations and clients who check credentials first all read a Sacramento firm’s website before they call. So do newcomers in Roseville, Folsom, Elk Grove and Davis.

Someone at a state agency is going to look at your website before they look at your bid. They may have found you through Cal eProcure, or a colleague passed along your name, and they want to confirm a few dull things fast: that you’re certified, that you’ve done this kind of work before, and that there’s a real person to contact. If the site makes them dig, they’ll move to the next name on the list without telling you.

Sacramento has a whole layer of businesses built around that moment. IT consultancies, engineering and environmental firms, printers, trainers, translators and facilities contractors all sell to government, often holding California’s Small Business or Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise certification through the Department of General Services. Their websites are read by procurement staff, not shoppers, and they should be written for them.

A website that works like a capability statement

The most useful thing on a government contractor’s site is a page that does what a capability statement does: who you are, what you’re certified for, which agencies or programs you’ve served, what you can deliver and which named person to call. It’s dull to design. It’s also the page a contract officer will print.

Around that, keep the rest plain and quick. Service pages should describe the work in the vocabulary buyers use in solicitations, not in your own internal shorthand. And please don’t hide your certification number in a footer. If you’re starting with almost nothing, a solid web design project can cover the whole thing; if the firm already has a site that embarrasses it, a website redesign is usually quicker.

Lobbyists, associations and the law offices around the Capitol

The blocks around the Capitol hold another group with a similar problem: trade associations, advocacy groups, lobbying shops and the law firms that practice in front of state agencies. Their sites are read by legislative staff, members and reporters who want a name, a position and a phone number in under a minute.

These are organizations where tone matters. An association site that looks like a startup undercuts the people it represents. A law office that leads with stock photos of gavels looks like every firm in every city. Our guides for law firms and nonprofits go into detail on staff directories, policy pages and member areas.

Roseville, Folsom and the rest of the region

Not every Sacramento business is near the Capitol, and much of the metro’s growth has happened well outside the city limits. Roseville and Rocklin in Placer County, Folsom and Elk Grove in Sacramento County, El Dorado Hills across the county line, and Davis over the causeway in Yolo County, where UC Davis shapes a lot of the local economy. People in these towns search for their town; name only Sacramento and they can’t tell whether you’ll come out.

A lot of these newer customers moved here from the Bay Area and still expect Bay Area service: book online, read the pricing approach, know who’s coming. They’ll look you up before they call, and good local SEO matters as much as the design.

The procurement question

Should our SB or DVBE certification be on the homepage?

Yes, near the top, with the certification number and a link to the page that explains what you’re certified to do. A buyer looking for a certified vendor shouldn’t have to search your site to confirm it. Put it on the contact page too.

Everything runs remotely, on Pacific Time, with calls and reviews planned around session deadlines and budget season. You’ll sign off on the plan in writing, and at handover we show your staff how to keep the site current.
