Sites for Milwaukee manufacturers, taverns and trades: capability pages engineers can scan, menus you can change on a Friday, and copy that names the WOW counties properly.

The companies nobody sees

Milwaukee makes a lot of things most people never look at. Harley-Davidson and Rockwell Automation are the names everyone knows, but behind them sits a long tail of machine shops, foundries, fabricators and control-panel builders in the Menomonee Valley and the industrial parks out in Waukesha County. Plenty are family firms on their second or third generation. Quite a few of their websites date from about the time the second generation took over.

That old site often does quiet damage. An engineer at an equipment maker who needs a second source for a machined part won’t spend long deciding if you’re credible, and what convinces them is dull: equipment lists, tolerances, materials, certifications, the industries you supply, and a quote form that accepts a drawing. A slideshow of the founder shaking hands convinces nobody. A website redesign for a shop like that is mostly editing. We find out what buyers ask when they phone, then put the answers on the page in the order they ask them.

Those pages also need to be found by people searching for the process rather than your name (“5-axis machining Wisconsin”, “powder coating Waukesha”). Getting that right is as much technical SEO as writing: clean structure, fast pages, and one page per process instead of everything crammed under “Services”. When a part photographs badly on the shop floor, a 3D render often shows it better.

Fish fry and festival season

The other Milwaukee runs on taverns, supper clubs and the Friday fish fry. If you own one of those, the site has a short list of duties: say what’s being fried this week, when the kitchen closes, and whether people should call ahead for a big table.

Summer turns the pressure up. Summerfest takes over the lakefront grounds, the ethnic festivals follow on the same site through the season, and restaurants in the Third Ward and downtown have hours and specials that change week to week. We set the site up so whoever runs the front of house can update it from a phone in two minutes. The restaurants guide has the details.

The WOW counties

Locals call Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties the WOW counties, and none of the towns in them think of themselves as “suburbs of Milwaukee”. Brookfield, Mequon, Cedarburg and West Bend are where people there shop and hire. A remodeler based in Wauwatosa who takes jobs in New Berlin and Menomonee Falls should name those places on the pages describing the work, ideally with photos from real jobs in each. A line under the logo reading “Serving Southeast Wisconsin” reaches nobody. If you’re in the trades, the contractors guide is worth reading before you write any of that copy.

A Milwaukee question

Our site is ten years old and still works. Is a redesign worth it for a manufacturer?

Maybe not yet, if every order comes through referral and buyers phone you anyway. Run three checks first. Open the site on your phone. Check whether the certifications listed are still current. Then ask whether a stranger could request a quote without picking up the phone. If any of those fail, the old site is costing you work you’ll never hear about.

Working together from a distance

No Milwaukee office; we’re remote. Calls happen on Central Time, the plan is written down and approved before design begins, and you review progress as it goes rather than waiting for a big reveal. Engineers tend to prefer it that way.
