Duval, St. Johns and Clay counties are full of people who rarely say they live in Jacksonville. We write sites around the part of town they’d name instead.

Mandarin, Arlington, the Beaches

Ask someone in Jacksonville where home is and you’ll rarely hear “Jacksonville.” You’ll hear Mandarin, Arlington, Riverside, San Marco, the Southside or the Westside, or just “the Beaches.” Since the city and Duval County consolidated in 1968, Jacksonville has covered nearly the whole county, which makes it enormous on a map and nearly useless as a way of telling customers where you work.

For a business, that’s a practical problem. A dog groomer on the Southside who also serves the coast needs to say Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach, which are separate municipalities with their own names in every search. A pressure-washing company based on the Westside should be honest that Ponte Vedra is a long haul. “Serving Jacksonville” tells a customer almost nothing, so we’d rather your site name the neighborhoods you’ll really drive to and leave the rest out.

South and west of the county line

A lot of the metro’s newer households sit outside Duval altogether. In St. Johns County, Nocatee and the developments along County Road 210 have filled in around older places like Ponte Vedra Beach and St. Augustine; The Players Championship brings its own crowd to TPC Sawgrass every March. Clay County has Orange Park, Fleming Island and Middleburg. Nassau County runs up to Fernandina Beach and Yulee, and Baker County is out past the Westside around Macclenny.

People in those places search by their own town and expect a business to know where it is. Where you genuinely work, each town deserves a sentence in your own words, and the bigger ones may deserve a page. Our notes on SEO go into how to decide.

When the moving truck just left

Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport, plus Kings Bay just over the Georgia line, mean a steady stream of families arriving with orders, a new address and no local contacts. They need a pediatrician, a mechanic, a vet and a hairdresser within the same fortnight, and they choose almost entirely from what they find on a phone.

What wins them over is unglamorous. Say which side of town you’re on and roughly how far you are from the base they’ll be driving to. If you’re a medical or dental practice, say plainly whether you take TRICARE; our medical and dental guide covers what else belongs on those pages. Keep hours current. A site last touched three years ago looks like a business that might have closed, and a newcomer has no neighbor to ask.

Mayo Clinic’s Florida campus, out on San Pablo Road, brings another kind of newcomer: patients and their families from out of state, sometimes staying for weeks. Short-term rentals, restaurants and services near the Beaches and the Southside see them constantly, and they search the way any visitor does, by distance and by what’s open tonight.

What we’d make for you

For most Jacksonville owners that means small business web design: a fast site with clear service areas, honest hours and a booking or quote form that works on a phone. A newer company may want a brand identity first, so the site has something solid to be built around.

There’s no Jacksonville office; everything is done remotely, with calls on Eastern Time. Reviews come through shared links, and at the handover your staff learn the editor, so the next update is theirs to make.

One question from Northeast Florida

Most of our customers are military families. What should the site do differently?

Make the basics impossible to miss, and plan around the summer moving season, when a lot of families arrive at once. A short page written for newcomers, explaining where you are relative to the bases and what to expect on a first visit, often does more than anything on the homepage.
