Web design for Birmingham and Over the Mountain

Referrals bring Birmingham firms and practices most of their work, and the website is where a referral checks you out. We also build for the Hoover and Highway 280 businesses south of Red Mountain.

South of Vulcan

Vulcan stands on top of Red Mountain looking out over downtown, and the ridge under him still sorts the metro in people’s heads. “Over the Mountain” means Homewood, Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills, and for plenty of people Hoover too. Folks who live there say it without thinking, and they search that way. Someone in Mountain Brook Village looking for a pediatric dentist types “Mountain Brook”, and a page mentioning nothing but Birmingham is easy to scroll past.

If those towns are where your customers are, the site should name them in its own sentences, not in a footer. One honest paragraph about the practice you run in Homewood, and the families who come to you from Vestavia, does more than a list of twelve suburbs nobody reads.

Referrals do the selling here

A lot of Birmingham’s professional economy runs on recommendation. The banks and insurers headquartered here, Regions and Protective Life among them, the law firms that grew up around them, and the doctors connected to UAB’s huge medical complex on the Southside: most of their new business arrives because someone trusted said “call this person.”

That makes the website’s job narrower than owners think, and harder. Someone who was referred will look you up before they call, probably on a phone in a parking deck before a meeting. They check a short list of things. Are you real and current? Do you do the specific thing they were told about? Who exactly will they be dealing with, and how do they reach that person? A firm site built around stock gavel photography and the phrase “aggressive representation” fails all of those checks at once, and the referral quietly goes somewhere else.

So for a Birmingham firm we’d spend most of the effort on people and specifics: proper bios with real photographs, practice pages that say what you handle and what you don’t, and contact details that go to a person. Our guides for law firms and accounting practices and wealth managers go deeper. If the firm’s name and mark have drifted over the years, a brand identity refresh usually belongs in the same project.

Highway 280, Hoover and Shelby County

Anyone who has sat on 280 at five o’clock knows how much of the metro has moved south along it, into Inverness, Greystone and out toward Chelsea. Hoover sprawls across the Jefferson and Shelby county line along I-459 and I-65, and Shelby County continues south through Pelham, Helena and Alabaster. For a contractor, a dentist or a restaurant there, the customers are local and they search locally.

The rest of the metro is smaller and more spread out: Trussville and Pell City toward St. Clair County, Jasper up in Walker, Oneonta in Blount. A business that genuinely serves those places can rank for them with very little competition, provided the site says so in plain words. We sort out which towns deserve a page during the SEO planning, and build the pages as part of the small business web design work.

How a remote project runs

Nobody has to drive downtown for this. The work is remote, with no Birmingham office, and calls fall on Central Time. You’ll review each version on whatever phone is handy, and before handover, whoever keeps your bios and news current learns to do it without us.

Asked in Birmingham

Do Mountain Brook and Vestavia need their own pages?

Only if you have something real to say about each. A practice that sees many patients from both can justify two short, specific pages. A business that just wants to appear there is better off naming them well on its main pages.

Our firm has twenty attorneys. Does every one need a full bio page?

Yes. Referred clients usually arrive with a name, not a practice area, and they want to read about that person. Keep each bio honest and current, and give it a real photograph taken on the same day as the others.
